It was manufactured in the Longquan kilns of the Southern Song Dynasty and the Hutian kilns of Jingdezhen, and was a common form in the Liao and Jin dynasties. The prototype, which has a classic incense burner shape, is housed in the British Museum. The incense burner is covered in a yellow glaze of straw ash and rice paste, and the mouth is inlaid with purple and gold glaze, all in the manner of the Ding kilns of the Liao and Jin dynasties, with a hand-woven copper wire mesh lid.
